Embrace the secret to success of leaders developing other leaders.
In Volgograd, Russia, I was asked the following question by a very gifted high school student who was in my “leadership” seminar audience, “Have you ever had someone in your organization that concerned you because they appeared to be an emerging leader and you thought they might want to take over?”
That was a very good question and early on in my leadership experience, I probably would have had a very different answer. But due to my years of experience as a leader and being a student of and teaching leadership around the world, my answer to this young lady was straight from the heart. I responded this way, “Great leaders don’t just look for people they can lead or who will follow, great leaders are in the business of developing other leaders.”
Leaders have strengths and weaknesses just like everyone else. Leaders have great qualities, but may be more gifted in some qualities more than others. But, a leader recognizes those weaknesses or “un” gifted areas and surrounds themselves with others who strengthen their weaknesses. This is one aspect of leadership that cannot be overlooked.
